Od 1992. do 1995. godine, tokom rata u BiH, Goražde je bio pod opsadom vojske bosanskih Srba.

Na kraju je postao jedini grad u istočnoj Bosni koji nije etnički očišćen od strane Srba.

Osamnaesti septembar 1992.godine, je dan kada je prvi put oslobođen grad na Drini.

Jedinice Armije BiH prvi put su oslobodile ovaj grad stvorivši više od 600 km 2 slobodne teritorije, i zlatnim slovima upisan je u historiju Goražda i Bosansko-podrinjskog kantona i svjedočanstvo je herojskog otpora njegovih branilaca, ali i svih njegovih stanovnika. Taj datum danas se obilježava kao Dan Općine i BPK-a Goražde.
